Madhya Pradesh, India's second largest state, lies across the very heart of the country, occupying an area of 3,08,144 sq. km. Surrounded by five states - Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Chattisgarh and Rajasthan, it is made up of the Malwa plateau in the north-west covered with black cotton-soil and rolling plains interspersed with hills of the Vindhyanchal range which run east-west across the middle, river valleys and thick forests.
