It is widely known that Ayurveda pays equal attention to the maintenance of good health as well as to the treatment of diseases. But did you know that there is a branch of this discipline that pays the same attention to the maintenance of the good health of plants and to the methods for the treatment of plant diseases?  In fact there is an enormous and elaborate corpus of literature in this field of Vrikshayurveda which offer a range of practices for the nutrition and treatment of plants.

In her talk titled, "Vrikshayurveda: A Legacy of Agriculture for Safe and Sustainable Food Production", Dr Sunita T Pandey of the G B Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, provides an overview of this area of study, explains its roots in Ayurveda and demonstrates how many of its rich and varied ancient practices can still be found in our farms.

Dr Sunita T Pandey, who holds a PhD in Agronomy, serves as Professor in the Department of Agronomy of the G B Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Uttarakhand where she has over three decades of experience in teaching, research and extension work.  She was the recipient of the Faculty Excellence Award in 2021, 2022 & 2023.

Her passion is to rejuvenate, innovate, validate, and popularize the eco-friendly sustainable time-tested and time-honoured ancient and medieval Vrikshayurveda-based agricultural practices.  She has guided 20 research scholars in Masters and Doctoral programs on the validation of Vrikshayurveda based practices.

She was instrumental in establishing the Y L Nene Training & Research Centre at GBPUAT, Pantnagar with the financial Support of Indian Knowledge System (IKS), division of Ministry of Education, Government of India. As Principal Investigator, she leads a multidisciplinary team of over thirty scientists is working on various research projects in this domain.

Dr Pandey has a number of research publications to her credit in her specialization and is the Senior Editor of Vrikshayurveda newsletter published by AAHF. She serves as a Member on several State and National level working committees on natural farming, including those established by ICAR, CSIR-NIScPR, NCERT and Government of Gujarat among others. She also serves as Honorary Executive Secretary, Asian Agri-History Foundation (AAHF), GBPUA&T, Pantnagar, Uttarakhand.
